HCA wants to reach out to its nurses to help guide their career development. There are a lot of benefits that they provide, like funding and skill development programs, that need to be more accessible to their staff. One way is to put it right in their hands, a mobile app. They needed to show the highest levels who they were trying to help to get funding for the program, and it needed to be done in a few weeks. The next week would need a rough version of a prototype to put in people’s hands – HCA Nursing GPS App.
This app would be a conduit for advancement. It would track goals, education, resources, and communication. The user would use the app to match up with a mentor. The app needed to work for both roles of mentor and trainee. The user could also be a member of an advancement group and their development would be tracked in the group.
The client made available two nurses to consult while developing questions about when and why the app would be helpful. Also, they provided insight into where they might be using the app. There was also preliminary research that was provided to understand the motivations of users. I put together a short customer journey in an illustrated video and a quick prototype to help tell the story.
Part 1: Storyboards
First were the storyboards. Taking the bullet points about the persona, Audrey, I roughed out a storyboard to tell her story. These were a great way to spur imagination for the stakeholders to get on board and show them how helpful the app would be to the user.

Part 2: Digital Illustration
With minimal changes, the next round was in digital format for working with a motion designer. I used an illustration style that would be rough intentionally to make the story seem simple and focused on the content vs the visualization. The colors came from the corporate palette.

Part 3: Information ARchitecture and application design
Content was important. I had access to two nurses to develop realistic content and understand if it resonated with them. Working through the perspective of how the user might want to achieve their goals. I defined tasks and resources for the user. The application would allow the user to match up with a mentor. The mentor could also review their history and suggest areas of growth. The application had to be for both mentors and aspiring users. The user also needed to track their position in an advancement group.

How the flow was presented to the client for discussion

And with a few interactions, the prototype was up and running.
The prototype is no longer available. Here is the interaction mapping that shows the path from login, onboarding, orientation tasks, and finally application flow.

Not bad for a few weeks.
